The “Space Oddity” singer passed away Sunday, January 10th 2016, just two short days after his 69th birthday. Bowie died peacefully as he was surrounded by his family in New York after a courageous 18 month battle with cancer.
Bowie was one of the most influential artists over that past 50 years best known for making hits like “Heroes”, “Moonage Daydream”, “Let’s dance”, “Rebel, Rebel”, “Modern Love”, “Young Americans” and creating the most famous flamboyant alter ego, Ziggy Stardust. The two-time Grammy winner released what would initially become his final album, Blackstar, the day of his birthday, Friday, January 8th, 2016. The album has been well received by critics as a “parting gift” to the world according to long life friend and producer Tony Visconti. Visconti wrote on Facebook –“His death was no different from his life – a work of art.”
Visconti isn’t the only one taking to social media accounts to mourn over the death of music icon. The biggest names in Hollywood share memorable thoughts and photos of the performer during this time of grief. Hundreds of fans took to action as well, as some gathered around his birthplace of Brixton, London, to pay tribute to the singer by laying flowers and candles by his mural and taking part in impromptu sing-along hits. There has also been crowds outside his New York home and in Berlin where he lived in the late 70’s.
As many of us are sad about the news just remember that the earth is over 4 billion years old and you somehow managed to exist at the same time as David Bowie. What an honor. We pray for his family and friends.
