Blindness Alma | A Room Without Walls

The week of Art Basel Miami 2017, Javier Martin will present, Blindness Alma – A Room Without Walls, an experiential installation that encapsulates his Blindness Concept in a transcendental physical space.

Javier Martin will present the latest extension of his Blindness concept at Valli Art Gallery, during the week of Art Basel 2017. Martin will welcome viewers into a 64 square-foot room constructed of mirror and light, where walls conceptually do not exist, a space simultaneously ethereal and unsettling. Blindness Alma will not only test the concept of perception but inspire self-reflection while allowing interaction and the opportunity to become an element of Martin’s art.

Upon entering Blindness Alma, viewers will find themselves leaving their perceived reality and stepping into a room that eliminates conceptual, architectural, and societal barriers. Enclosed in a limited depiction of infinity, surrounded by images of Martin’s subjects blinded by glowing neon lights, as well as their own reflections, viewers have the freedom to interact with the experiential piece as they see fit. Whether they question their societal views of self-worth or simply document their experience for social media, they share a connection to the art and the artist. Unlike some of Martin’s other work, one cannot replicate this distinct moment in time nor the physicality of the space.

Blindness Alma – A Room Without Walls will be on display at Valli Art Gallery, 1924 North Miami Ave. Miami, FL. 33136 from Thursday, December 7th – Sunday, December 10th, between the hours of 10 am – 6 pm. The public will have the opportunity to meet the artist on Thursday, December 7th at 7 pm. Admission is free.

Javier Martin (Spain, 1985) is a multidisciplinary artist who bases his creative exploration on the careful observations of his surroundings, detecting relationships that might otherwise pass by unnoticed to the myopic observer. With this approach, the artist conceives circumstances that invite reflection on impending matters in today’s world. His works carry eloquent meaning and profound messaging, prompting viewers to reflect on their behavior and social responsibility. Raised in southern Spain, Martin began painting in oil colors at the age of seven, and had his first exhibition at the age of eight; however, he never allowed formal artistic training to influence him. Instead, he relied on his experiences, which allowed him to explore the possibilities of various materials which he incorporates into his work today. Martin supplemented his artistic development by traveling, living, and working in countries – from South Korea, Hong Kong, to the United States – honed his observation skills, allowing him to learn from people and daily situations far removed from his background. He explores painting, collage, sculpture, performance, and video art as one particular medium does not constrain his work. Through his work Martin demonstrates his capacity to manipulate materials and conditions to construct sharp visual metaphors masterfully.
