Eddy Bogaert, a New York artist, is currently making waves in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, not only to enjoy the Olympic Games, but also to exhibit his art for his own solo art show in a magnificent mansion in Santa Teresa, an amazing neighborhood in Rio. The Dominican and Belgian artist’s mom actually passed away in 2006 and his art usually has a depiction of a female figure hidden underneath more layers of paint, symbolizing a longing for his mother and his desperate need for love. Eddy believe every artist has a story that makes you feel at ease with yourself and your soul: this is his story, he wears it on his sleeve like he wears his painting on his leather jacket. He looks up to artists like Domingo Zapata with his colorful and chaotic way of painting as well as the works of English artist, Damien Hirst too, along with admiring his techniques and the way he does his PR.

Part of Bogaert’s art is the “persona” he depicts in his paintings with an abundance of layers, creating the “mask” we all wear to hide our real selves and by manipulating colors and light. Through this process, Bogaert is able to portray the “true self”. With colors popping all around in every direction, a “chaotic balance” is achieved. His work is called a ‘chaotic balance’ because through the chaos one can start seeing balanced patterns and subliminal messages. Only with the help of a black light, can one actually see all the layers and depth that go into each one of Eddy’s paintings.

“Art is a reflection of my reality. My art is my escape — I went through struggle in my life, I give the canvas human characteristics that mirror what I’m feeling at the time. If I’m happy, I paint. If I’m sad, I paint. I love beauty, I originally wanted to pursue modeling based on that love but I transferred that same concept into my paintings. I need to start getting deeper, though, I’m trying to show a new side of me too. One side is happy and one is more chaotic and crazy. I don’t do it for the money or fame, those are all just perks to me.”
